Effectiveness of Self-Instructional Module on Management of Postpartum Haemorrhage

Rincy Alex

Abstract

Postpartum haemorrhage is the most common cause of perinatal maternal death and is a major cause of maternal morbidity worldwide. Globally, about 500,000 women die annually from complications during pregnancy or childbirth. A well organised self-instructional module is an effective strategy to improve the knowledge of nurse midwives regarding postpartum haemorrhage. An evaluative approach with one group pre-test post-test design was used for the study. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to draw 30 nurse midwives as samples. Data was collected by administering structured knowledge questionnaire on postpartum haemorrhage. The collected data were analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The analysis of the pretest knowledge revealed that, 23.33% of nurse midwives had inadequate knowledge whereas lowest percentage (10%) of them had adequate knowledge. In the post-test, majority (76.66%) of nurse midwives had adequate knowledge and none of them had inadequate knowledge. Results showed that significant association was found between educational qualification and the post-test level of knowledge. The calculated χ2 value (11.45) was more than the table value (7.815) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study proved that the self-instructional module is an effective measure to improve the knowledge of the nurse midwives regarding postpartum haemorrhage.
