Effect of Video-assisted Teaching Program Regarding Obstetrical Emergencies on the Knowledge and Skill in Management of Obstetrical Emergencies Among ASHA Workers

Abstract


The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of a video-assisted teaching program focused on obstetrical emergencies on the knowledge and skill levels related to obstetrical emergency management among Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a single group, conducting pretests and posttests. The sample consisted of 45 ASHA workers of selected primary health centers in Kannur district, selected by convenience sampling. Knowledge was evaluated using a structured questionnaire, and a checklist for observation was employed to assess the proficiency in handling specific obstetrical emergencies. The intervention consisted of lecture cum discussion and demonstration of skill in management of selected obstetrical emergencies with return demonstration and practice sessions using a video and manikin. The study found a statistically significant difference between mean pretest and posttest scores of knowledge (P < 0.05) and skill in management of selected obstetrical emergencies (P < 0.001) among ASHA workers. The study concluded that the video-assisted teaching program is effective in improving knowledge and skill in basic emergency management of selected obstetrical emergencies among ASHA workers.
