Challenges Faced by the Nursing Professionals in Management of Patients with COVID-19

Nanthini Subbiah, A. Jeganathan

Abstract

Nurses as frontline warriors play significant role in management of patients with covid 19. Nurses are the ones doing the initial screenings, taking care of the critically ill, implementing triage protocols, communicating to families, and attending to the dying in health facilities. While they serve on the frontlines to contain Covid-19, they face many challenges like lack of resources such as Personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect themselves from infection, delayed recognition of COVID-19 symptoms, lack of experience in dealing with respiratory pathogens, exposure to large number of patients in long shifts with inadequate rest periods etc. To combat these challenges, in any public health emergency, organization of standardized short training on regular basis is a key factor to promote better patient care as well as to support health care workers. In order to prepare our health care workforce to fight the outbreak it is essential to ensure adequate supply of PPE and other requisite medical supplies, training on infection prevention, control and management, financial and social protection  as well as psychological support
