Codependency and Quality of Marital Life among Spouse of Patient with Alcohol Dependency Syndrome: A Correlational Study

Abstract


Background: Alcoholism is a universal problem worldwide. The ill-effects of alcohol are not only affecting the individual user, but also society as a whole. Alcoholism continues to be a growing nuisance among all the strata of the society. Alcoholism is a chronic condition characterized by frequent repetition of drinking of alcoholic beverages, in excess of the dietary social use of community and to an extent that affects drinker’s health or his social or economic activities. Aim: The present study aims to assess the codependency and quality of marital life among spouses of patients with alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS). Materials and methods: The study was conducted among 60 spouses of patients with ADS who are selected using a convenient sampling technique. The data were collected using socio- personal proforma, Span Fischer Codependency scale and ENRICH Quality of Marital Life Scale. Results: The study finding reveals that majority of the subjects had average level of codependency (60%). The mean score of codependency level was 49.78 and its standard deviation value was 17.41; similarly, the mean quality of married life score was 31.53 and its standard deviation 29 were 3.039. There was a moderate negative correlation between codependency and quality of married life among the subjects in the study. The association between level of codependency and socio-personal variables all not significant. The association between quality-of-life and socio-personal variables all not significant. Conclusion: The present study revealed that codependency among spouses of alcohol dependent patients was the main reason for the decline in the quality of marital life. A family that has developed co-dependent relationships may be in need of family therapy to overcome codependency.
