Abstract

The transition to parenthood is period of disequilibrium, with new expectations especially the conception with Artificial Reproductive Technique (ART) The couple relationship during this transition is most fragile as they learn to adopt. They have the physical, social, psychological, and relational changes. Infertility brings up several individual or marital problems. The transition to parenthood and marital relationships among couple who have experienced infertility need to be reviewed. No doubt, the couple conceived after successful ART are usually expected to be more involved in parenting while on the other hand, sometimes their parenting difficulties remain inconsiderate and thus provision of insufficient support poses negative impact on parental functioning. Their past experience of infertility and its treatment aggravates their fear regarding loss during pregnancy which in turn increases their need for support from the health personnel. Keeping this in view, their social needs, the effectiveness of Parental preparedness package (PPP) on social health of couple conceived after ART was evaluated. A quantitative research approach and Pre experimental one group pre-test post-test research design was used including 50 couple (50 wives and 50 husbands) conceived with Artificial Reproductive Techniques visiting IVF clinic, DMCH, Ludhiana were selected with non-probability purposive sampling technique. Socio demographic profile, maternal and paternal profile and structured social health assessment scale were used to collect data of couple by doing pre and post interventional assessment. The intervention was Parental preparedness Package focussed on social needs and relations with spouse, family, neighbours and friends. The findings revealed that mean score of social health of couple (both husband and wife) increased significantly after the intervention which infers the effectiveness of parental preparedness package (p=0.001). The present study concluded that PPP focussing on social needs should be incorporated in the birth preparedness classes for all couple who conceive using ART
