Medication in Older people

Gowtham Dev, Dr. Vinny Narayan

Abstract

Medication therapy in older people requires an equilibrium between the pros and cons. While many of these drugs improve the survival and quality of life of elderly people, upon prolonged usage they may develop symptoms attributed by the effect of these prescribed drugs. Medications should not be prescribed if they pose more risk than benefit. Apart from this, progressive ageing and associated bodily changes will deny the elderly advantages of correctly prescribed regimen. In an appropriate prescription, use of over-the-counter medications and poor adherence to treatment modalities, are highlighted areas in elderly medication protocols. The objective of a medication protocol should always be a safe and efficacious therapy.
