ANEMIA AND DIET

Bamila N

Abstract

Anemia is a condition that occurs when hemoglobin level goes below the normal range. As a result of it, the oxygen carrying capacity to the tissues gets diminished. Among the various types of anemia, nutritional anemia due to iron deficiency is the commonest one and it can be treated with dietary measures. But adequate knowledge about the diet and its absorption are very essential to combat it. Intake of iron especially heme iron is utmost important. For the iron to be absorbed to its greater extent there should be the presence of certain enhancers like vitamin C, Vitamin A and beta carotene and Vitamin 9 and 12. Importantly, there are also certain inhibitors which should be avoided to maximize the rate of absorption. They are like calcium, phosphates, oxalates, tannins, phytates and polyphenols. By developing adequate knowledge about these nutrients, one can ensure that they can be recovered from their condition very easily.
