A Study to Assess the Knowledge and Attitude of Couples Regarding Antenatal Package in Selected Rural Community area of Kengeri, Bangalore

Abstract


While there are policies and awareness campaigns are there, Essential interventions in ANC include identification and management of obstetric complications such as preeclampsia, tetanus toxoid immunization, intermittent preventive treatment for malaria during pregnancy (IPTp), and identification and management of infections including HIV, syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). ANC is also an opportunity to promote the use of skilled attendance at birth and healthy behaviours such as breastfeeding, early postnatal care, and planning for optimal pregnancy spacing. The present study was designed to assess the effectiveness of self-instructional module on knowledge regarding antenatal package among couples in Kengeri PHC area at Bangalore. The data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Knowledge score of couples in pre-test 34 (68%) were inadequate, 10 (20%) were in moderate and 6 (12%) were in adequate and in Post-test it is 34 (68%) in adequate and remaining 16 (32%) were in moderate. Paired ‘t’ value of knowledge was 16.50 which were greater than the table value 1.677 at 0.05 of significant. Therefore, ‘t’ value was found to be highly significant. Chi square (X2) was computed to test the association between post-test knowledge of PU students with selected demographic variables. The result noted that there was no significant association between post-test knowledge and selected demographic variables, such as age, religion, educational status, siblings in family, source of information, and if yes, specifies the source; hence, the research hypothesis is rejected. The overall experience of conducting this study was satisfying and enriching the knowledge. The study was a new learning experience for investigator. The study shows that there is a great need to develop and implement self-instructional module for various topics and procedures. The study reveals that the self-instructional module can be used as an effective teaching learning method.
