Abstract

The aim of study was to assess the knowledge of primipara mother regarding growth and development of infant. Child development refers to the process in which children go through changes in skill development during predictable time periods called developmental milestones. Developmental delay occurs when children have not reached these milestones by the expected time period. Mothers are the primary caregiver, if they possess adequate knowledge regarding milestone development of infants through teaching programme, then they can apply the same in their practice. A pre-experimental (one-group pre-test–post-test) design was conducted to assess the knowledge of primipara mothers before and after the implementation of structured teaching programme regarding growth and development of infant in a selected village of Tarn Taran, Punjab. It can be seen from the finding that the pre-test mean knowledge score found to be 7.3 and standard deviation score is 2.4145. The post-test mean knowledge score found to be 18.6 and standard deviation score is 2.674. Majority of mothers after post-test were having good knowledge score. The impact of age (chi-square and p-value = 3.6, 0.707, respectively) and education (chi-square and p-value = 3.633, 0.811, respectively) on knowledge of mothers of infant is significant as the calculated value is more than the tabulated value at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that, if additional information is given regarding various aspects of milestone development, there would be an enhanced awareness among them and it was helpful in increasing their skill to identify their babies’ normal development and any deviations.
