Suvarna Gujar

Abstract

Early entry to antenatal care is important for early detection and treatment of adverse pregnancy
related outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that pregnant women in
developing countries should seek antenatal care within the first four months of pregnancy. In developed
countries, such as United Kingdom and the United States, antenatal care recommended within the first
12 weeks of pregnancy. The WHO recently recommended a reduction in the number of antenatal care
visits in the developed countries because of the evidence suggesting that having fewer antenatal visits
does not affect the outcome of care, other than woman’s satisfaction level; however, woman are still
advised to attain antenatal care early and even earlier than previously recommended. Seven million of
prenatal deaths in the developing countries were due to maternal health problem. Objectives of the
study are to assesses the knowledge regarding antenatal care among the primigravida mothers. To
assess the effectiveness of self-instructional module on knowledge regarding antenatal care among
primigravida mothers. To associate the knowledge regarding the antenatal care with their selected
demographic variables. The study was conducted in selected hospitals in Wardha city using quantitative
approach and pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design.100 primigravida mothers attending

antenatal clinics were selected by sampling techniques. Pre-test was conducted, then intervention (self-
instructional module) was implemented. Post-test was carried out after 3 days. Findings of study reveal

that self-instructional module was effective in improving the knowledge among the primigravida
mothers. Self-instructional module is an effective method to improve the knowledge of primigravida
mothers regarding antenatal care. Self-instructional module was useful tool to improve the knowledge
among primigravida mothers regarding antenatal care.
