An Experimental Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Video-assisted Preoperative Teaching on Anxiety among Patients Undergoing CABG Surgery in GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore

Abstract


Objectives: (1) To assess the level of anxiety among patients undergoing CABG surgery; (2) to assess the effectiveness of video-assisted preoperative teaching on anxiety; (3) to compare the level of anxiety among experimental and control group; (4) to associate pretest level of anxiety with selected demographic variables among patients undergoing CABG surgery setting: preoperative wards of cardiothoracic surgery at GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore. Conceptual Model: The conceptual framework used for this study was the modified Imogen King Transaction Process Model. Methodology: A true experimental—pre-test and post-test control group design was adopted, and 60 samples were selected by simple random sampling technique. The pretest level of anxiety (using modified Hamilton Anxiety Rating sale) and vital parameters (blood pressure and heart rate) were assessed on the day of admission. The experimental group was given a video-assisted preoperative teaching on an individual basis, whereas the control group received only the routine care. On the day of surgery, pretest level of anxiety and vital parameters were assessed for both the control and experimental group. Result: Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data and the results showed that there was a significant difference between the posttest anxiety level of control group and experimental group. The mean difference was 3.866. The reduction of anxiety was statistically tested by two mean ‘t’ test method and the results were highly significant a ‘t’<0.05. This finding indicates that the Video-assisted Preoperative teaching on perioperative aspects of CABG surgery was effective in reducing anxiety among the experimental group. Conclusion: The findings of the study proved the importance of preoperative education intervention with video-assisted information to a great extent, effective in reducing anxiety among patients undergoing CABG surgery. Hence, the video-assisted preoperative teaching program can be implemented by nurses of preoperative cardiothoracic units, on a regular basis.
