Abstract

Nurses’ knowledge is important in promoting organ donation. They can play a significant role in raising awareness among public. This study was carried out to assess the effectiveness of organ donation educational package on dissemination of information by the nurses among patients and their caregivers. A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 149 nurses (75 in experimental and 74 in control group) working in selected wards of a tertiary care institute of North India. A questionnaire was administered to assess knowledge of nurses and instructions regarding dissemination of information regarding organ donation were given in both the groups. Educational package was developed and administered in the experimental group. After 1 week, an interview schedule was used to assess dissemination among 261 patients and their caregivers (139 in experimental and 122 in control group). Before the educational intervention, both the groups were homogenous in terms of knowledge and willingness of nurses towards pledging for organ donation. After the intervention, significant differences were noted between dissemination (P<0.001), median knowledge score of patients and their caregivers (P<0.001). There was no significant difference between donor cards filled by them (P=0.73). Organ donation educational package is effective in improving dissemination of information by the nurses among patients and their caregivers.
