Abstract

Total knee replacement (TKR) surgery has become the most successful surgery for patients with severe debilitating arthritis. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of muscle-strengthening exercise on muscle function among patients undergone TKR surgery. Design: Quasi-experimental design, where pre and post-test with control group design. Setting: Erode Trust Hospital, Erode. Participants: 30 patients who undergone TKR surgery fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Selection criteria: Mild to poor muscle contraction with age group 20 to > 50 years, trauma with a lower limp fracture. In this study, I had excluded the patients who are having a weight of more than 80 kg. Methods: Out of 30 patients, 15 patients were selected as an experimental group and 15 patients were selected as a control group by purposive sampling technique. The muscle-strengthening exercise was given to patients who undergone TKR surgery, the duration was 30 minutes once a day for 5 days. The level of muscle function was measured by the muscle poor grading scale before and after the intervention. Results: In pre-test, the experimental group showed that 20% of patients who undergone TKR had mild muscle function and 20% of participants showed moderate muscle function. The paired ‘t’ test value was 10.69 in the experimental group whereas, in the control group, it was 1.38 when compared to table value (0.684) both are high. Comparison of mean, SD, and mean percentage of the experimental group, overall pre, and post-test scores reveal that pre-test mean score was (1.80±0.68) which is 36%, whereas, in posttest, the mean score was (3.20±0.84), which is 64%, showing a difference of 28% on the level of muscle function. A significant association was obtained between post-test muscle function scores in occupation and obesity. Whereas, no significant association was observed between post-test muscle function scores for age, gender, types of illness, dietary pattern, BMI, and previous history of TKR surgery in the experimental group. Conclusions: There was statistically significant effectiveness in muscle strengthening exercises on muscle function among patients who undergone TKR Surgery.
