Abstract

Background: The International Labour Organization acknowledged the need for safe and healthy workplaces for nurses 32 years ago. World health assemblies since 1979 have stressed the value of nurses to the world community and addressed the need to strengthen nursing and midwifery services, including providing nurses with safe healthful work environments. International, national and local organizations and many government entities have implanted policies and regulations to protect nurses. ICN is clear that a safe work environment in the health sector significantly contributes to patient safety and supports positive patient outcomes. Methodology: It is a descriptive study. The study was conducted among 60 samples selected by universal sampling. Permission was taken from Institute Ethical Committee, NMCH. Informed consent was taken from all the patients, socio-demographic data and clinical data has been collected by interview with nursing staff. The data has been analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Major findings of the study: Out of 60 nurses, 42 (70%) were in the age group of 25–35 years, 14 (23%) were in the age group of 36–45 years, 2 (3%) were in the age group of 46–55 years and 2 (4%) were in the age group of more >55 years. Majority of the nurses were 22 (85%) males and 38 (15%) were females. Out of 60 nurses, 33 (55%) were married and 27 (45%) were unmarried. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed a high incidence of low back pain among nurses at NMCH Hospital. The majority of nurses (87.5%), experience low back pain (LBP) on a regular basis, with reported moderate degree of pain, although females displayed higher
percentages of LBP incidence. Many risk factors were identified, lifting, moving equipment, positioning of patients in bed, workload, pressure and a poor working.
