Abstract

The accuracy of laboratory testing procedures is crucial to the proper diagnosis and treatment of the patient. Delay in the transportation of blood samples to the laboratory may cause alteration in test results. The present study was aimed to assess the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice on Specimen Transportation among Hospital Attenders in Pondicherry Institute of Medical Science. Study was conducted among hospital attender in medical wards, surgical wards, and critical care units. 70 participants were selected by simple random sampling. Among 70 hospital attenders, 4(5.7%) had inadequate knowledge, 49(70%) had moderately adequate knowledge and 17(24.3%) had adequate knowledge. The attitude among hospital attender on specimen transportation was 23–33 (18.5%) 13 had moderately favorable attitude and between 34 and 44 (81.4%)57 had favorable attitude. The practice on specimen transportation among hospital attenders was 4–7 (4.3%) 3 had inadequate practice and 8–10 (95.6%) 67 had adequate practice. There is no association between the knowledge, attitude, and practice selected socio demographic variables. Hospital attenders who transported the specimen from the ward to laboratory have adequate level of practice because of their daily activity and experience. The current study recommended that they have to be educated about the specimen transportations.
