Abstract

Background: Patients who are undergoing angiography experience pain and anxiety. This increases myocardial oxygen demand and aggravates the workload of heart and also increases the duration of hospital stay. Music therapy is an easy and non invasive interventional approach that can help patients enhance their health status and alleviate pain and anxiety. Methodology: The present study entitled, Effectiveness of music therapy on pain and anxiety in Kongunad Hospitals, Coimbatore. The research design chosen for the present study was quasi-experimental nonequivalent, pre-test post-test with control group design. Ludwig Von Bertanlanffy general system theory was the conceptual framework of the study. The calculated sample size was 60. The sampling technique was based on non probability purposive sampling technique. Among the samples 30 were allocated for experimental group and 30 were allocated for control group. The music therapy was implemented as a strategy to reduce the dependent variables of the study. The investigator has used the music therapy for 20 minutes through music pillow during coronary angiography. The samples in control group were on routine treatment. The level of pain and anxiety was assessed by using numerical pain rating scale and Spielberger’s state anxiety inventory scale respectively before and after the coronary angiography. The data analysis was done by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: In experimental group the paired “t” test value between pre and post-test level of pain and anxiety t = 24.27, t = 24.69 respectively. The independent “t” test value for level of pain t = 6.19 and for level of anxiety t = 15.23 and it is statistically significant at p<0.05 level. Moderate positive correlation between the level of pain and level of anxiety (r = 0.6).The results revealed that there was a significant reduction in level of pain and level of anxiety among patients who were on music therapy than those who were not on music therapy. Conclusion: Music therapy can significantly reduce the level of pain and level of anxiety to an extent among patients undergoing coronary angiography.
