Correlation of Overweight and Obesity with Certain Risk Variables Among Adolescent Girls
Abstract
Objectives: Assessing the relationship of overweight and obesity with few risk variables among teenage females. Methods: A descriptive survey approach was undertaken to assess the risk factors of overweight and obesity among adolescent girls in selected college of Bhubaneswar. Convenience sampling was used to pick 500 samples, and a structured interview schedule was used to gather information from the students. Results: Out of 500 adolescent girls BMI of 38% girls are 25-29.9, BMI of 48% girls are >30, 14% girls are in normal weight, 38% girls are in overweight ,48% girls are in obesity. The univariate analysis revealed that in dietary behavior 90% girls like junk food and 10% girls do not like junk food. In Physical activity 49% girls were doing exercise every day and 51% girls were not doing exercise every day. At Pearson correlation it was found that positive correlation between BMI and dietary pattern (r=0.10) and BMI and physical activity level(r=0.10). Conclusion: Students presented correlations between BMI and faulty dietary habit and poor physical activity were positive. Future studies are necessary with higher samples.
