A Pre-experimental Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Demonstration on Homemade ORS Preparation among Women (18–65 years) in Safdarganj, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Most diarrhoeal deaths can be prevented by the prevention and treatment of dehydration. Oral rehydration solution (ORS) was recommended since the 1970s and 1980s to prevent and treat diarrhoeal dehydration. The WHO has now firmly established that oral rehydration therapy (ORT) treatment can be safely and successfully used in treating acute diarrhoea. The aim of ORT is to prevent dehydration and reduce mortality. A pre-experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of demonstration on homemade ORS preparation among women (18–65 years) in Safdarganj, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. The objectives of the study were: to assess the predemonstration score, to assess the post-demonstration score, to find out the effectiveness of demonstration, and to find out the level of association of pre-demonstration score with selected demographic variables. A pre-experimental research design was used for the study. The samples were women residing in Safdarganj. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 20 samples. The data was generated by using an observation checklist. The data obtained from the study subjects was analysed and interpreted in term of objectives and hypothesis of the study. The study concluded that the majority of women had fair practice on homemade ORS preparation in pre-demonstration practice test. After demonstration, the majority of women have good practice on homemade ORS preparation in post-demonstration practice test. Hence, the demonstration was effective in improving the practice among women regarding homemade ORS preparation. There was a significant association between pre-demonstration practice score with selected demographic variables such as age, marital status, educational status, type of family, religion, occupation, monthly income and source of knowledge regarding demonstration on homemade ORS preparation among women.
