Effectiveness of Weight-bearing Exercises on Menopausal Symptoms among Menopausal Women

Bhuvaneshwari D.

Abstract

Menopause means the permanent absence of monthly periods and menstruation. The objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of weight-bearing exercises on menopausal symptoms among menopausal women. A true experimental design with an evaluative approach was adopted and the study was conducted in Karumbukuppam Village, Gummidipoondi Taluk, Thiruvallur District. 60 post-menopausal women were selected by simple random sampling method and were assigned 30 samples each in experimental and control groups. The tools used for assessment of the severity of menopausal symptoms were a semantic differential scale for sleep disruption and a modified numerical categorical scale for low back pain. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. The study findings concluded that the comparison of post-test mean score of sleep disruption was 1.17 with S.D 0.59 in the experimental group, and in the control group, the post-test mean score was 2.50 with S.D 0.51. The calculated ‘t’ value was 9.35 which was statistically highly significant at p<0.001 level. The comparison of the post-test level of low back pain between the experimental group and control group, mean score of low back pain was 1.909 with S.D 0.92 in the experimental group and in the control group, the post-test mean score was 3.57 with S.D 0.97. The calculated ‘t ’value was 6.81 which was statistically highly significant at p<0.001 level.
