Abstract

Gestational diabetes generally occurs in the latter half of pregnancy (3rd Trimester), and disappears
after delivery as the hormonal levels revert back to normal. If it fails to disappear, it suggests that
there may be overt diabetes which may have antedated or begun concomitantly with the pregnancy.
This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of information booklet on knowledge of
gestational diabetes mellitus among primigravidae attending antenatal clinic at Devaraj
Manickchand Maternity Hospital, Chennai. The objectives of the study were to determine the
effectiveness of information booklet on knowledge of gestational diabetes mellitus among
primigravidae mothers in the experimental group and to associate the level of knowledge on

gestational diabetes mellitus with selected demographic variables in the experimental group. Quasi-
experimental pre-test and post-test design was used for the study; using non-probability convenience

sampling, 50 samples were assigned for experimental group and 50 as control group. Data was
collected by administering a structured knowledge questionnaire. The pre-test mean score of
knowledge was 10.70 with 3.02 and the post-test mean score was 22.10 with SD 1.11. The calculated
‘t’ value of 25.235 was found to be statistically highly significant at p<0.001 level. This implies that
the information booklet on gestational diabetes mellitus had significant improvement in knowledge.
