A study to assess knowledge, attitude and stated practices towards parental role among spouses of pregnant women in selected govt. hospital, in West Bengal

Abstract


A descriptive study was conducted to assess knowledge attitude & stated practice towards parental role among

spouses of pregnant women in selected Govt. hospital in West Bengal. The conceptual framework adopted for

the study was based on health belief model. Nonprobability purposive sampling technique was used to select

sample from Kakdwip Super specialty Hospital. Sample was 140 spouses of pregnant women admitted in

antenatal ward. Data was collected through valid & reliable structured interview schedule to assess knowledge

stated practice & attitude scale to assess attitude. The result revealed that majority of spouses (52%) had poor

knowledge among total sample (140). They have good knowledge about antenatal checkups (83%),

supplementation (72%) postnatal sexual interruption (72%) importance of exclusive breastfeeding (62%); but

having poor knowledge on newborn vaccination (31%) initiation of breast feeding (44%) baby bath (34%)

postnatal supplementation (19%) antenatal investigation (27%) and antenatal vaccination (46%). Majority of

spouses (53%) had good stated practice and 56% spouses accompany their wife for ANC. The percentages of

accompany for investigation and help in heavy lifting are 76% and 85% respectively. 56% of samples help in

cooking and 33% watch movie together. 46% arrange blood donor. 48% & 28% spouses take information about

JSY & JSSK scheme respectively. 49% of the sample check M.C.P.C. of their wife. 78% spouses have positive

attitude to accompany their wife for ANC 62% & 59% spouses have positive attitude to aware about JSY &amp

JSSK respectively. Only 38% 39% & 49% have positive attitude on helping baby bath awake night in baby

care, helping in feeding respectively. 11% & 41% spouses have negative attitude about abnormal baby & sex of

baby and think that mother is responsible for abnormality and sex of the baby. A significant association was

found between knowledge & age [χ 2 =16.47 df(1)]  religion [χ 2 = 4.72 df(1)] education [χ 2 =14.2 df(1)]

occupation[χ 2 =12.43 df(1)]. Stated practice & education [χ 2 =12.22 df (3)] occupation [χ 2 = 8.27 df (3)].

Attitude & education [χ 2 = 16.83  df (1)] occupation [χ 2 = 4.47 df (1)]. A significant relationship was found

between knowledge & stated practice [r = 0.38 df (139)]  knowledge & attitude [r = 0.2237  df (139)]  attitude

& stated practice [r = 0.46 df (139)]. The study has implication in the field of nursing education

Nursing practice nursing administration  nursing research. Based on the study findings, the recommendations

were made for a study on large sample & different settings.
