Case report on Juvenile Diabetes

Abstract

A young female, a known case of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus Type 1 since 4 years, was on insulin therapy for her systemic condition. She was brought to ER with chief complaints of vomiting, cough, fever and altered level of consciousness. On examination revealed hyperglycemia of 580 mg/dl and was diagnosed to have diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Immediately, the child was shifted to coronary care unit and the treatment was initiated. About a week and 2 days later, the child’s condition improved and was discharged with appropriate follow-up advice. Due consideration is to be given in the emergency management for the patient with DKA to prevent devastating complications.
